Step 0 before the actual PICO BOT build

PICO BOT BUILD GUIDE · STEP 0

Before You Start

Building your PICO BOT is simple and fun, but before opening the tools and making connections, let's prepare a clean workspace and understand a few important safety rules.

Good news: You don't need a professional electronics laboratory to build PICO BOT. Most of the build can be completed using a few simple tools. A small soldering setup is useful and recommended, but only use it when required.

🧰 What You’ll Need

Keep these basic tools beside you before starting the build. It makes assembly much easier and helps you make cleaner, safer connections.

Small Screwdriver

Useful for assembling the chassis, motor mounts, clamps and other mechanical parts.

Wire Cutter / Small Pliers

Helpful for handling wires, tightening small parts and making your wiring neat.

Electrical Insulation Tape

Keep a small roll nearby to safely cover exposed electrical joints or wires whenever required.

Small / Double-Sided Tape

Useful for temporarily holding lightweight modules or wires in position during your build.

Laptop or Computer

You’ll need one later for programming and testing your ESP32 and uploading PICO BOT projects.

Clean Work Area

Work on a dry, clean table with enough space so screws, jumper wires and small components don't get lost.

Safety First

A few simple habits can prevent most mistakes.

Power OFF While Wiring

Disconnect the battery before changing ESP32, motor-driver or other electrical connections.

Check + and − Carefully

Always check power polarity before switching the robot on. Reversed connections can damage electronics.

Protect Battery Terminals

Never allow battery terminals or exposed power wires to touch each other. This can create a short circuit.

Insulate Exposed Connections

If any conductor is exposed, safely cover it using electrical insulation tape or suitable heat-shrink tubing.

Be Careful With the Soldering Iron

The soldering tip becomes extremely hot. Always return it to its stand and never touch the metal tip.

Don't Force Components

ESP32 pins, jumper wires and connectors are small. If something doesn't fit, check its orientation first.

Keep Liquids Away

Build PICO BOT on a dry table and keep water, drinks and other liquids away from the electronics.

Ask for Help When Needed

Younger builders should use soldering tools and work with batteries under responsible adult supervision.

⚡ Never connect the ESP32, motor driver, motors, battery wiring or any PICO BOT component directly to household AC / mains electricity.

🔋 A Quick Note About Batteries

Your battery powers the robot, so handle it carefully just like any other rechargeable electronics battery.

✓ Insert batteries only in the correct direction.

✓ Use the proper battery holder and recommended charger.

✓ Never intentionally short the battery terminals.

✓ Do not solder directly onto rechargeable battery cells.

✓ Stop using a battery if it becomes damaged, unusually hot, swollen or physically deformed.

✓ Disconnect the battery when you are making or changing connections.
